Speaking

I am an experienced speaker, speaking on panels, delivering talks and lectures online and in person, and taking part in podcasts. I have substantial experience of public speaking, both within the craft world in my previous career in healthcare.

In the last few years I have been involved in talks and panel discussions at the the London Art Fair, the V&A, London Design Festival, Tresor Contemporary Craft, Goldsmiths’ Fair, and Collect amongst others. Topics range from the creative and practical processes of making to working with curators for exhibitions and descriptions of my own practice.

Material Matters

You can listen to me talk about my work on Grant Gibson’s podcast Material Matters here.

“Juliette Bigley is an artist who creates extraordinary, abstract, but somehow familiar, pieces out of metal. We first saw her work at New Designers, the graduate design show held annually in London, after she left the Cass in 2013 – and since then her career has gone from strength to strength. She has a piece in the permanent collection of the V&A; won a slew of awards; written a book entitled, Material Perspectives; and exhibited around the world.

Happily, she’s also an incredibly eloquent advocate for her material of choice and the importance of thinking through making.

In this episode we talk about: discovering metal by chance and the effect that moment had on her life; why making helps her to understand the world; how different metals have contrasting personalities; her fascination with the vessel; a love of lines and boundaries; her background in singing and healthcare; the relationship between music and making; her problem with perfection; oh and swimming the Channel (yes, really).”

You can hear me in conversation with curator and journalist Corinne Julius here.

“Join Corinne Julius and Juliette Bigley as they discuss Juliette’s silversmithing practice that is driven by her academic research. Juliette makes abstract metal sculptures based on composite geometric forms that explore how our internal experiences interact with the world. Made to contribute to her thinking rather than as conclusions in themselves, they are ‘punctuation marks’ in an on-going dialogue between thinking, writing and making with each discipline contributing to a more rounded understanding. Juliette has exhibited at Design Miami, ArtGeneve, Tresor and Collect (winning Collect Open in 2018) with a solo exhibition at The Scottish Gallery in 2019. She has work in the V&A and the Irish State collections and has received funding from Arts Council England. She is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She produced her first publication, Material Perspectives, in 2018.”
